About Volleyball

Volleyball is a game or team sport involving two teams competing against each other to try and score as many points as possible by hitting the ball as close to the opposing team’s net as possible.

Volleyball is a team sport in which a net separates two teams of six players. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team’s court under organized rules. It has been a part of the official program of the Summer Olympic Games since Tokyo 1964.

The sport was founded in Ancient Greece and was originally played between men. Women’s volleyball has existed since the 1930s and both sexes competed together during the 1968 and 1972 Olympic Games. The first women’s Olympic volleyball medal was won by the Soviet Union at the 1976 Summer Games. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, men’s volleyball was reintroduced and it was an official Olympic event for the first time, together with women’s volleyball.

The volleyball court was invented by Leonidas Daskalakis (Greek: Λευνάκης Δακαλάκης), the Greek architect who designed the first Olympic stadium. It was held in the Amphitheater of Athens in 1906. To develop volleyball as an Olympic sport, three other Greek architects, Nikos Moraitis, Leonidas Kotsis, and Stylianos Sakalis, were assigned to the task.

Another basic characteristic of the volleyball court is the use of a transverse net that is 10 meters high and is set a distance from the opponent’s end zone. This, along with some related rules, is a feature of all forms of volleyball. The men’s Olympic competition began with their inaugural tournament in 1960. Women’s volleyball competitions were introduced in 1968, as they were being held concurrently with the men’s events. The ball used in the sport is called volleyball for both sexes, the court is called a volleyball court, and the net is referred to as the “volleyball net”
