About Speedway

A motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit is the motorcycle speedway, usually referred to as the speedway.

The vehicles are mostly of the motorcycle category, though they can be modified for other classes.

Riders are known as “pilots” and the machines are referred to as “machines”

The bikes are known as “semi-pro”

The sport is restricted to motorcycles, and is the most common form of motorcycle racing.

With a top speed of around 80mph, speedway bikes have no brakes, just one fixed gear, a clutch and 500cc engines which run on methanol fuel. A speedway bike can accelerate from 0-60 mph, faster than a Formula 1 car, in terms of power to weight ratio. Tracks on the speedway are oval and vary across the country. Riders have different heights to compete at the local track but we will match up with your height and race like the professionals. You’ll be able to read their history and learn about the sport you’ll be competing in. You’ll also have to memorise difficult tricks to perform on your bike in a timed challenge.

Speedway bikes are completely unique, they are 500cc, have a single fixed gear and no brakes! Bikes are differentiated by the engines used, the rear wheel sprockets and the gear ratio chosen. … Pure methanol is used to fuel the bikes, to ensure a higher compression ratio which results in a higher engine power output. In single wheel bikes (4s), the gear ratio is limited to 1/1.35, or 25% gear range (and they don’t have pedals!). They have better throttle response and handling than other bikes at lower speed. Bikes used in drag racing have very short gearing ratios (2:1 or even 1:1 for the 4s bikes).

Speedway racing takes place on a level oval track consisting of two straights joined by two semicircles. Tracks must be between 260 and 425 metres (853 and 1394 ft) in length, this is measured at a distance of 1 metre (3.3 ft) from the inner boundary.

Speedway racing came back to the Granite City on Wednesday, Aug. 9, when the St. Louis Ultimate Disc team hosted the 2018 Disc Nationals, according to coach Billy Brackett.
