About Chess

Chess is such a beautiful game because it can offer players so much joy and fulfilment without the need to take the pain. All it needs is a healthy imagination. It has nothing to do with personalities, political leanings, social status, castes or anything else.

In fact, once we accept the idea of a game that rewards the exact opposite of our natural inclinations to fear, we can finally acknowledge that all that we’ve spent the last few years bashing – all those hysterical tweets and fake memes and banal press releases – is all in our heads.

Chess is a recreational and competitive board game played between two players. To differentiate it from its predecessors and associated games such as xiangqi, it is sometimes called Western or international chess.

Chess has been known since the 1st century BC. In Aelian’s Miscellany in AD 185, a game was published mentioning a variant of chess with up to 21 pieces. From at least as early as 700 AD, chess was an important item in miniatures and other pre-modern games.

Chess is considered by the International Olympic Committee to be a sport. As mental exertion manifests itself physically, Chess requires physical exertion. Chess has rules and etiquette which are officially recognized internationally. Chess is competitive as the participating players feel the drive to win. The player who wins has “won”, so to speak. The term “joking” is often used as a diversionary tactic when a player feels overwhelmed by the task of effectively playing a complex game.

“Chess, like hockey and baseball, has always attracted individuals of various interests and professions,” notes a member of the International Chess Federation. “All of the world’s players are deeply involved in their own careers or organizations. The rules of chess are similar to those of the rules of baseball and many in the board game community use both games to keep themselves occupied when travelling. Most serious chess players are also competitive or semi-competitive players in some other sport.”

The chess world is based in the Eastern Hemisphere where the Sun does not set for months. Chess can be played in pretty much any part of the world, but an east-coast player needs to be particularly adept at orienteering.
