About Bowls

Bowls, or lawn bowls, are a sport in which the aim is to roll biased balls so that they stop near a “jack” or “kitty” smaller ball. It is played on a bowling green, which may be flat or convex or uneven. The jack is rolled by using a hand weight on the handle end, and wooden or plastic “kitties” or “knots” may be rolled in the hands or on the ends of long rods. The ball may be any combination of rolled plastic or wooden lumps with the exception of 13 balls being standard. For each stroke the same type of plastic lumps, rods, etc. must be used, and the pace of play depends on the size of the lawn bowls green. Rules vary widely by region but some common rule variations are, not to make a sound, to roll the “jack” over the “kitty” before releasing, and to use a “weighted” or “power” ball that may be heavier or lighter.

Bowls originated in Australia, beginning in 1877 with the first modern-style lawn bowl games. Bowls was one of the sports included in the 1908 Summer Olympics, but the Games are no longer scheduled. There are many international competitions, particularly in the United Kingdom. In Japan, “mud bowls”, an annual event that involves players using ice-cold mud, is held in Tokyo in late April.

Bowls, also called lawn bowls, outdoor game in which a ball (known as a bowl) is rolled toward a smaller stationary ball, called a jack. The object is to roll one’s bowls so that they come to rest nearer to the jack than those of an opponent; this is sometimes achieved by knocking aside an opponent’s bowl or the jack. The game is played between two teams of two players each, who stand on opposite sides of a bowling alley.

wo players, each using one bowl, take turns hurling the bowl toward the opponent’s jack.

Lawn bowls is one of the popular sports in Australia and is played at the local level in many cities and in other countries.

Lawn bowls is a low-impact, therapeutic exercise that can improve fitness, coordination and confidence. Consider lessons to develop adequate skills and technique. Warm up and stretch before and cool down after play. Active interval training or simply walking through the lawn bowling lanes can help improve balance, coordination and cardiovascular health. Enjoy a social experience with other players and bowlers, and you’ll experience the stress-relieving effects of this simple sport.

Bowling is a target sport and recreational activity in which a player rolls a ball toward pins (in pin bowling) or another target (in target bowling). The term bowling generally refers to ten-pin bowling, although bowling could also refer to lawn bowls in the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth countries. For people of all ages, bowling is a family sport. People of all ages, genders, ethnic groups, religions, sexual orientations, abilities, and social classes play bowling. Today, bowling (along with baseball and softball) is one of the three major team sports in the United States and has been part of the heritage of American sports since the 1860s. The current national governing body is USA Bowling, established in 1974, and the United States Bowling Congress was established in 1922.

Bowling developed from a game called baza, invented in the 16th century, in which bowlers tossed heavy items of stone against obstacles. The first reference to bowling can be found in the poem Winter Meetings in Boston by Thomas Pynchon, published in the Boston Pilot in 1694: “An eldest guest of Boston called bace upon one of the lippetyders in Holy Week: after a long warre he played from the lippetyder the bowling-game”.
