Australia, officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a sovereign country comprising the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania, and numerous smaller islands. It is the largest country in Oceania and the world’s sixth-largest country by total area.
The landmass of Australia is nearly 2.8 million square kilometers (1.1 million square miles), with about 17 million people living there. It stretches along the Southern Hemisphere’s east coast along the Pacific Ocean to Cape York on the Northern Hemisphere’s east coast. It is the most populous country in Oceania and the sixth-most populous country in the world. Australia’s highest mountain is Mount Kosciuszko, located in the state of New South Wales. Australia also has an extensive coastline which stretches 7,750 kilometres (4,160 mi) from its southernmost point at Cape Otway in Western Australia to the southeast of Indonesia.

The first European to reach the Australian mainland was the Dutch navigator Abel Tasman in 1642. He named the continent he encountered “New Holland”. Australia has the world’s second-largest economy, after China, according to purchasing power parity.

The First Nations (traditional native Australians) or Aboriginal Australians, later named the Aboriginal Australians, came to be called the people of Australia. For a bond, etymon arkhein, meaning “Australia” the word “the aborigine” itself was derived from the Latin aboriginus, from Greek aigis. The name first appeared in England in 1629 and referred to either the region or the people. However, the English settlers preferred to spell it after a real estate entrepreneur named Henry Ayers who bought an area in what is now Victoria in 1791. It is commonly believed that in 1861 the British Royal Navy renamed a British corvette, which they were then using in Australia to avoid confusion with another ship named Oceana. In fact, however, this ship was named Vestris after Vestris, a hero in Homer’s Iliad.
The Australian Government attempted to correct this usage in 1857 with the release of a set of Australian flags which were emblazoned with both the Spanish phrase “Aoere a magna Australia” (“To the Great Southern Land”) and the Arabic phrase “Arabian Peninsula” (“Permanent Country”).
